Former Miami Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis’ cause of death is “undetermined,” the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office said Friday. Davis was found dead at a Southwest Ranches home April 1, 2024, police said. He was 35. “Due to the extensive investigation and totality of the circumstances, including the inconsistencies between the scene and the findings at autopsy, the cause and manner of death in this case is best classified as undetermined,” the medical examiner said in a statement Friday.

A Lauderhill Police officer was injured in a hit-and-run Tuesday evening in Sunrise, police said. The officer, who was not identified, was taken to the hospital. Information on his injuries was not available Tuesday night. The officer was hit about 5:35 p.m. during “an investigation” in the 2300 block of University Drive, and the driver fled, Lauderhill Police said in a news release. The driver was found a short time later, police said. Sunrise Police are investigating.

TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday signed a death warrant for a man convicted of brutally murdering a couple at a Charlotte County sod farm in 1997. James D. Ford, 64, is scheduled to be executed Feb. 13 at Florida State Prison in the murders of Greg and Kimberly Malnory. It would be the first execution this year in Florida and would come after one inmate was executed in 2024.

Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida overnight near the mouth of the Aucilla River in the Big Bend area as a massive Category 4 storm, bringing a nightmare storm surge just 20 miles from where similarly sized Hurricane Idalia came ashore last year around this time and caused widespread damage. Across Florida, Helene has left more than 1.2 million homes and businesses without power as of early Friday morning.

Francine weakened to a tropical storm overnight after making landfall in Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane that blacked out more than 275,000 homes and businesses, and sent storm surge rushing into coastal communities. As Francine continues to weaken as it moves north, forecasters are looking east in the Atlantic, where Tropical Depression Seven is likely to briefly become a tropical storm Thursday and two other systems continue to be monitored.
