On June 23, when Cabrini announced its closure through email, professor and chair of history and political science Dr. James Hedtke thought it was “like being at a wake or watching someone on hospice die.” As a professor with longtime tenure, the school’s closing hit him and others particularly hard. When hearing the news of Cabrini’s closure, professor and chair of chemistry Dr. Melinda Harrison said it had a “deep impact,” on her which she hasn’t fully processed yet.

Cabrini’s thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Israel as they are being terrorized by a group called Hamas. Hamas’ surprise attack resulted in the single deadliest day in Israel’s history. This attack has killed more than 1,300 Israelis and at least fourteen Americans. Hamas has also taken dozens of hostages and are holding them in Gaza. All these events have led to Israel declaring war on Hamas, striking back hard, and causing chaos.

The war in Ukraine has not been the center of media attention lately, but it is still happening. Although it is not the media’s current spotlight, many in our area stay involved and follow the war closely. The war began on February 24, 2022, when Russia launched an invasion that caused an escalation of the war. Ukraine launched counteroffensives on August 29, 2022. A stalemate lasted from from November 12, 2022- June 7, 2023.

A business owner and an activist weigh in on the impact that the proposed 76ers arena that is set to be built a block from Chinatown in Philadelphia will have on their way of life, culture, and work. Wei Chen is the civic engagement director of Asian American United, AAU, one of the leading organizations in Philadelphia fighting against the proposed arena. Wei was born in China and immigrated to Philadelphia over a decade ago.

Academic free speech, specifically extramural speech, is always a hot topic, but right now it’s hotter than usual. Extramural speech is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as being “outside the walls of a town, college, or institution.” In the case of Cabrini, that extramural speech came from Dr. Kareem Tannous, a business professor terminated by the university in August 2022. Tannous has since filed a lawsuit against the school.
