    On Tuesday, April 29, academic spirit replaced the gymnasium’s athletic atmosphere as poster boards crowded the court’s floor. This was Cabrini’s 18th and final Arts, Research and  Scholarship Symposium. The symposium asks students to conduct social experiments as part of their research, but this year had fewer subjects due to lower enrollment. Still, the students turned out excellent work.

    Frances Xavier Cabrini is the patron saint of immigrants. Her drive to help these individuals is embodied throughout the curriculum at the college named after her. One of the many journalists who made their mark in the Loquitur spreading awareness on the topic is America Lopez-Santiago (’21), who attended Cabrini with her sister Ahtziry (’19).

    On the cold morning of April 6, 25 Cabrini students loaded onto a bus headed to New York City. It was a trip helmed by SEaL, The Center for Student Engagement and Leadership, which provided free transportation to New York City with an option for free tickets to the musical “SIX.”Senior Belinda Hedden helped coordinate the trip and said she had three goals: for all students to have a fun time, for all students to make it back on the bus for departure,and for the bus to leave on time.

    A dreary forecast delayed the anticipated Cabrini vs. Eastern softball game to Tuesday, Mar. 12. Come Tuesday, the weather was perfect, and many Eastern fans gathered in the bleachers and grass hillsides around the field as the teams marched across the diamond. This was clearly a numbers game, as the Eagles team dwarfed the Cavaliers by a rowdy 28 to 10. Despite their small roster, the Cavs fought hard.

    On June 23, when Cabrini announced its closure through email, professor and chair of history and political science Dr. James Hedtke thought it was “like being at a wake or watching someone on hospice die.” As a professor with longtime tenure, the school’s closing hit him and others particularly hard. When hearing the news of Cabrini’s closure, professor and chair of chemistry Dr. Melinda Harrison said it had a “deep impact,” on her which she hasn’t fully processed yet.
