    "Things are not what they seem at a local veterans club," is the message some members are sending. In a recent letter to the Richmond News, long-time Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans in Canada Unit 284 (ANAF 284) member Joanne Teraguchi questioned the club's claim to be open to everyone. "I have been a 10-year member of ANAF and recently received an email that the 'full-service kitchen,' which was mentioned in the (Richmond News) article, will be closed as of July 20," Teraguchi wrote.

    A Richmond-based artistic swimming club is holding free sessions next month for those interested in trying out the sport after watching the Paris Olympics. On Aug. 10 and 11, Richmond kids aged six or above can join Pacific Wave Artistic Swim Club's free 45-minute try-it sessions and three-hour beginner classes in Watermania. To participate in the free experiences, kids must be able to swim 50 metres unassisted in the deep end.

    A duo known for quirky and original Canadiana music laced with harmony will grace the stage at the Chinese Bunkhouse next month. For its latest live concert on Aug. 15, the Steveston Folk Guild (SFG) is welcoming Vancouver-based duo Fleetham Stevens to Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site. The duo is made up of musicians and songwriters Doug Fleetham and Shelley Stevens, who have been active in the Vancouver music scene for about 25 years.

    Stepping into August means Richmond's most fragrant agricultural celebration is nigh. On Aug. 17, the annual Richmond Garlic Fest returns to the Sharing Farm to highlight sustainable agriculture — especially locally grown garlic. An annual festival that draws about 5,000 attendees from all over the Lower Mainland, the Garlic Fest promises "hundreds of pounds" of locally grown garlic varieties, delicious treats such as garlic ice cream and a farmer's market highlighting local products.

    Free admission to an interactive museum showcasing Canada's sports history will be available every month starting August. From Aug. 1, community members will get to check out the Richmond Olympic Experience for free on the first Thursday of each month. Admission to the museum will also be free on Canada Day. The Richmond Olympic Experience, located inside the Richmond Olympic Oval, features sports simulators for kayaking, sit-skiing, bobsleighing, car racing, and the latest addition, surfing.
