Counter-terrorism police are leading an investigation into a fire at a home owned by Keir Starmer that broke out in the early hours of Monday morning. London fire brigade attended the property in the north of the city after the fire was reported shortly after 1.30am. The door was damaged but nobody was hurt. The prime minister, who resides with his family in his official residence in Downing Street, is reportedly letting out the four-bedroom home.

Two of the most senior jobs in British policing paying more than £200,000 a year have attracted only one applicant each, the Guardian has learned. The roles were deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan police and chief constable of Merseyside police, based in Liverpool. Senior figures in policing and in government are concerned about a lack of talent at the top of policing. Rob Carden, the chief of Cumbria, will become the new leader of the Merseyside force.

Four Iranian men were being questioned over an alleged major terror plot against a “specific” British target as investigators urgently try to establish whether there is any continuing danger to the public despite the arrests. The men, all Iranian nationals, were arrested on Saturday, with armed police, and in at least one instance special forces soldiers, sent in to detain them amid fears some of the suspects may have had weapons.

The suspect in the Leeds crossbow attack wrote a Facebook manifesto espousing plans for “terrorism, revenge and misogynistic rage” that referenced the 2019 massacre in New Zealand, police believe. Owen Lawrence is suspected to have shot the women, aged 19 and 31, on Saturday in Headingley before turning a firearm on himself. Both women were taken to hospital, with one sustaining life-threatening injuries.
