People forced from their homes north of Edmonton due to a rapidly spreading wildfire are now allowed to return home. Evacuation orders for homes near Redwater, Alta., were lifted Tuesday morning - more than a week since they were issued as the flames spread amid high winds and parched conditions. Sturgeon County officials said all residents previously under evacuation order are allowed to return home immediately.

A north Edmonton condo evacuated nearly two years ago over fears the building could collapse has been sold. The long-awaited sale will offer some financial reprieve to previous residents of Castledowns Pointe, which has sat vacant since September 2023. Harmani, an Alberta-based developer and rental company, purchased the property for $5.1 million with plans to repair the existing structure and rent its 83 units once reconstruction is complete.

Wildfires that flared up across northern Alberta on Tuesday afternoon have those communities threatened by flames bracing for another parched, windy day. Fires burning across the region triggered a string of emergency alerts and evacuation orders as the risk escalated for regions north, east and west of Edmonton. The fires, fanned by blowing winds, grew rapidly throughout the afternoon, pushing a new wave of evacuees to emergency reception centres at community halls and hockey rinks.

An all-terrain vehicle that caught fire in a remote stretch of an Alberta provincial park is being blamed for igniting a wildfire now burning out of control northeast of Edmonton. The wildfire in the Redwater Provincial Recreation Area, which burned out of control through the weekend, has destroyed 400 hectares and put nearby residents on evacuation alert.

Officials in the County of Grande Prairie say crews have made significant progress battling a wildfire that forced some people from their northern Alberta homes over the weekend. In a statement Sunday evening, emergency officials said the county's regional fire service and Alberta Wildfire have been working to contain the fire using retardant dropped by air tankers and by building a dozer guard to help contain the spread.
