Marika Vida was a sommelier for 13 years at Ritz-Carlton hotels in New York and Pennsylvania, where she now lives. She also has been a wine buyer and consultant, and doing wine education seminars is one of the things she likes most. Last year, she did a tasting seminar on French wines at the New Orleans Wine & Food Experience. This year, she returns to NOWFE (June 11-15) to lead a tasting of wines from Southern Hemisphere producers including Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

The late historian Stephen Ambrose wrote biographies of Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon, as well as many books about World War II. For histories of the war in Europe, Ambrose interviewed veterans about their experiences landing on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day and battles across the continent. Finding a home for those soldiers’ oral histories was one of the reasons Ambrose wanted to build a D-Day museum in New Orleans.

B. Dylan Hollis left his native Bermuda to study jazz piano at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, where he now spends most of his time. During the pandemic, he started baking odd recipes from a 1915 cookbook he had found. His baking videos on @bdylanhollis took off. His 2023 cookbook “Baking Yesteryear: The Best Recipes from the 1900s to the 1980s” was a best seller. He followed up with the recently released “Baking Across America: A Vintage Recipe Road Trip,” which includes a stop in New Orleans.

Wisconsin native David Barbeau came to New Orleans by way of Chicago to work in fine dining restaurants. He now runs his own businesses selling preserves, supplying coffee shops with prepared foods and doing events. Much of his produce comes from the Resurrection community garden on Jackson Avenue. He’ll be using produce from the garden in a Wisconsin-meets-Texas collaborative dinner on June 5 at Palm & Pine. He’s also got a collaborative dinner at the garden on May 31.

Austin, Texas’ Chaparelle started touring well before they released any music, propelled in part by the band’s chemistry. Some of that is personal, as vocalist Zella Day and guitarist Jesse Woods got romantically involved almost at the same time as they started exploring writing music together. But down the road, the core of the band was the product of a double date, with Beau Bedford, who plays in the group and produces its music, and Day’s manager.
