We appreciate the interest of Sui et al1 in our recent report2 and agree that SET 2,3 and many other tumor biomarker tests rely on averaged gene expression from a mixed population of cells, including malignant tumor cells, tumor-associated immune cells, stromal tissue, and endothelial cells. These tests, of necessity, are unable to get at the spatial and microenvironment-related heterogeneity that exists.

By William BarlowSir John Barlow, the former amateur jockey, polo player and master of the Cheshire Hunt died on 30 December aged 88. He was brought up in Cheshire and having attended Winchester College, went to Trinity College, Cambridge where he was master of the drag hounds. There, having managed to hide his car from the authorities, he spent most early mornings riding out at Newmarket.
