It took Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) 15 rounds of votes to gain the razor-thin margin of GOP support required to secure the gavel. As Speaker of the House of Representatives, he has facilitated bipartisan deals to raise the debt limit and avert a government shutdown that have crystallized opposition against him, setting up an effort by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to oust him from the speakership. This nearly unprecedented challenge to the Speaker raises many questions.
