Charlotte City Council member Tiawanna Brown will be challenged in the Democratic primary for her District 3 seat. Montravias King announced on social media yesterday that he’ll take on Brown in the September 9th primary. He’s a former teacher and works as a nonprofit management executive and renewable energy consultant. Brown was indicted on Covid fund fraud charges last month. She has pleaded not guilty.

A new poll out this morning from Winthrop University in Rock Hill says half of South Carolinians think tariffs on imports from other countries will end up costing the U.S. more money than it brings in. Also, while nearly 9 in 10 South Carolinians anticipate paying more for the products they buy because of these tariffs, 62% believe higher tariffs will result in the creation of more U.S. manufacturing jobs.

The sessions are voluntary, but third-year quarterback Bryce Young says players are eager to get going with lots of new faces on the roster. Mecklenburg County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the new budget tonight. Last week, County Manager Denna Diorio presented her budget recommendations for the last time before retiring this summer. It accepts Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools budget request of roughly $700 million. Mecklenburg County is one of a handful of counties in the state that don’t receive a teacher pay supplement.
