Robert Swan, an actor who starred in the films “The Untouchables,” “Hoosiers” and “The Babe,” has died. He was 78. Betty Hoeffner, Swan’s best friend, confirmed to The Times that the actor died in his sleep Wednesday at his Indiana home after a long battle with cancer.

The bandshell at Crystal Lake Main Beach hosts dozens of events and concerts, a structure made possible by a nonprofit for the Crystal Lake Park District almost 30 years ago. After years of inactivity, the nonprofit shut down in 2021 and another, called the Crystal Lake Parks Initiative Foundation, started up with a newfound energy. Two years later, the foundation is looking to keep that energy alive.

The fountain in the Van Buren Plaza was shut off for summer construction and will not be turned on again. The downtown Joliet landmark has had its last splash and eventually will be removed completely as a new city square is built and Chicago Street is redesigned. Preparatory work for the project is underway, which led to the fountain being shut off this summer, said city Public Works Director Greg Ruddy. Ruddy said the fountain structure itself will remain for now.

GURNEE – For more than 20 years, the Gurnee Exchange Club’s Ribfest has been a popular part of the Gurnee Days weekend festival. Starting at noon Aug. 12, the club will be offering barbecue ribs, pulled pork sandwiches and roasted corn, plus a kids’ menu of hot dogs and chips. Diners can choose from a full dinner platter or a la carte items with food service continuing until dusk or until sold out. There also will be a beer tent with service starting at noon.

Lockport and Homer Glen are set to receive $17.1 million for improvements to local highways, bridges and roads. The two neighboring communities will see more than nine infrastructure projects totaling more than $17.1 million over the next six years, according to a news release from state Sen. Michael E. Hastings.
