Yellowstone National Park is announcing that the park has hosted 992,352 recreation visits in July 2024, which is up 2% from July 2023 (969,692 recreation visits). This July’s visitation showed an 8% decrease from July 2021 (1,080,767 recreation visits). So far in 2024, the park has hosted 2,626,091 recreation visits, up 7% from 2023 (2,462,535 recreation visits), and down 2% from 2021 (2,668,765 recreation visits).

The Park County Sheriff’s Office is giving an update on the wildfire that started on July 19th after a lightning strike. Dubbed the “Clearwater Fire,” located 11 miles west of Wapiti, the fire has consumed 138 acres and has 0% containment. Currently, there are 94 people who are monitoring the fire which is still in a remote part of Park County, located on a ridge line between the Elk Fork and June Creek drainages, approximately one mile south of Clearwater Campground.

The Clearwater Fire is growing. The wildfire, which started with a lightning strike on July 19th, on a ridgeline between the Elk Fork and June Creek drainages, has increased in size, according to a media release from the U.S. National Forest Service. The fire, about one mile south of the Clearwater Campground, is very difficult to reach, according to Jon Warder, Incident Commander for Wyoming Type 3 Team, has consumed 70 acres but isn’t a threat to homes of outbuildings.

An unusually large geyser explosion has destroyed a boardwalk in Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone National Park officials say around 10:00AM MST on Tuesday morning, a small hydrothermal explosion occurred in the Biscuit Basin thermal area, about two miles from of Old Faithful. Numerous videos of the event were recorded by visitors. The explosion appears to have originated near Black Diamond Pool. Biscuit Basin, including the parking lot and boardwalks, are temporary closed for visitor safety.
