Lawmakers have introduced a bill seeking to protect Nevadan’s access to materials in public libraries and prevent censorship based on content — in other words a ban on book bans. The bill would protect the freedom to read and staff’s freedom to manage library content without political or ideological interference.

The bill would add certain street foods to the list of homemade food products that are sold and prepared outside of a commercial kitchen. The list includes corn on the cob, aguas frescas, or fresh cut fruit—street foods popular in Mexico and Latin America. This would exclude these foods and others from having to meet current health district requirements that usually apply to perishable food.

Mariachi music and the smell of traditional Latino dishes filled Nevada’s Capital during Latino Lobby Day –community members from across the state gathered to celebrate, and engage—learning how the legislative process affects their lives. The biannual event brought together a large number of Latinos, giving them the chance to hear from and speak directly with state lawmakers about legislation impacting their communities.

Lawmakers are considering a bill that would help prevent children from being left in legal limbo if parents are suddenly detained by immigration. Assembly bill 460, or the Family Unity Support Act, would be used in the event a child was separated from their parents due to a federal immigration order, and who have not already set up a guardianship. A relative or other interested party could apply to care for the child in the event a parent is detained or deported by immigration enforcement.

U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto addressed the Nevada Legislature on Tuesday, cautioning that proposed federal budget cuts to Medicaid could have serious consequences for the state’s healthcare infrastructure and overall budget. During her remarks to lawmakers in Carson City, the Nevada Democrat said Congressional Republicans are considering a federal budget plan that would reduce Medicaid funding by nearly $880 billion nationwide.
