It’s Father’s Day tomorrow in the UK, but I won’t be celebrating it with my children (don’t worry, we never really do). Instead, I will be travelling five hours on a plane, back from my Mother’s 90th birthday party. I guess you can say that I’d be celebrating my own Mother’s Day.

Nectarines add a fruity twist to the classic combo of tomato, mozzarella and basil. Sometimes known as Caprese salad, it’s named after the Italian island of Capri. For this recipe you will need a blender.

My idea of a salad is pretty different from others. To most, what comes to mind when they hear ‘salad’ is something light and fresh that is thrown together without too much thought or deep intention. Greek salad, lettuce salad, cob salad... that kind of thing. Those are definitely salads, of course, but the first thing that comes to my mind is something much more structured and considered.

This simple recipe, full of spiced, tomato-y flavor, is rich with culinary influences. Peter Frankopan's "The Silk Roads" has been on my night stand for some months now. It's a hefty presence, nudging me whenever I reach past it for my phone and lighter sorts of entertainment. It's a book with such intellectual weight that it invites both eagerness and a sort of low-grade anxiety. There is something about reordering your entire view of world history at 9 p.m. that feels ... ambitious.

Verena's potato pie was a major hit at the #OTK. Think potato dauphinoise meets quiche, wrapped up in pastry.. It's as good as it sounds! Salsa verde on the side to cut through the carby pie. Ready to watch on our @YouTube channel. #ExtraGoodThings https://t.co/pi5oFvOq3N

No judgement here.. We just love food! Noor and I had a great time chatting with @NicholasGrimsha and @AngelaHartnett on Dish from @waitrose. Listen wherever you get your podcasts. #WaitroseDish https://t.co/A1qrm9GnKm
