Among the many rambling statements President Donald Trump made in the Oval Office during his meeting with Canadian PM Mark Carney on Tuesday, one stood out: The president took credit for Carney’s come-from-behind electoral victory on April 28. “I think I was probably the greatest thing that happened to him,” Trump said. For once, the president was telling the truth. According to early polls, Carney and his Liberal Party seemed destined for a humiliating defeat.

“They can’t do anything. We’re recording them.”There is so much to abhor in the footage of federal agents smashing a car window in New Bedford to seize a Guatemalan immigrant on Monday. Facts can be awfully stubborn things. And they’re especially inconvenient for the Trump administration. Why bother with a debate over the facts when you can fix it so they don’t exist in the first place? And it’s easier to suggest vaccines cause autism if you scrub the data suggesting that theory is a massive and deadly crock.

When it comes to targeting immigrants, the second Trump administration — not yet 100 days old — has already achieved a level of sadism that makes its previous term look like a love-fest, family separations and all. In addition to detaining and disappearing students and migrants with valid visas and legal residency, Trump II is shredding constitutional rights and making a mockery of habeas corpus — assisted so far by the extremists on the Supreme Court who seem supremely disinclined to stop him.
