OK, so now we do care about an aged president’s mental acuity? Sorry to ask, it’s just so hard to keep up. I know it was a very big deal last summer, when then-President Joe Biden delivered a confused and disastrous debate performance that made even former and future president Donald Trump look coherent. After that, many agreed that Biden was in cognitive decline and had to go. He eventually stepped aside to make way for then-VP Kamala Harris.

They always attack the arts. Authoritarians know that cultural institutions can be places where dissent and resistance thrive. In museums and concert halls, on stages and streets, art can push boundaries and give voice to people on the margins. Of course, the Trump administration will have none of that. Now, art must be about satisfying Dear Leader, and reflecting his vision of Great America. What does that look like?

Among the many rambling statements President Donald Trump made in the Oval Office during his meeting with Canadian PM Mark Carney on Tuesday, one stood out: The president took credit for Carney’s come-from-behind electoral victory on April 28. “I think I was probably the greatest thing that happened to him,” Trump said. For once, the president was telling the truth. According to early polls, Carney and his Liberal Party seemed destined for a humiliating defeat.
