Swim scheme for children with disabilities expands in Bristol

Bristol leisure centres are creating more opportunities for children with disabilities to participate in swimming lessons. Everyone Active on behalf of Bristol City Council, are working in partnership with Level Water to run the scheme – a national charity dedicated to increasing opportunities for disabled children to learn to swim.
Bristol area knife crime country's fifth-highest over past five years

Bristol and surrounding areas saw one of the highest rates of knife crime in the country over the past five years. But Avon & Somerset Police have reported a 54 per cent reduction in street-based knife crime in the past six months. The region reported the fifth-highest rate of serious knife crimes in England, at 9.46 incidents per 10,000 people over the last five years, according to an analysis of the national ONS data.
Bristol NHS Trusts pay out £1.8m in gynaecology medical negligence claims

Two NHS Trusts across Bristol have paid out a combined total of £1.8 million in damages for gynaecology medical negligence claims lodged against them in the past five years, a new investigation has revealed. But the number of claims are much lower than other trusts across the country with Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust being the worst, having paid out over £6 million in damages.
Bristol's Mazi project launches Christmas raffle to support local youth

A Bristol charity has launched a Christmas raffle to raise funds for young people experiencing food insecurity. The MAZI Project hopes to raise £6,000, with all proceeds going towards supporting care leavers, young asylum seekers and youths overcoming homelessness. The funds raised from the sale of their raffle tickets will be used to provide over 2,000 nourishing meals and 380 meal kits for disadvantaged young people across Bristol.
Homeless families still being placed in hotels despite them being ‘a last resort’

Homeless households including families continue to be placed in costly hotel accommodation in Bristol. Bristol City Council has said that using hotels as temporary accommodation is a ‘last resort’ but continues to rely on them due to the high levels of homelessness nationally. 'Abigail', who did not want to give her real name, moved out of a hotel with her son this week and said that she was one of eight families staying in that particular hotel.

Hate crime reports against Muslims in Avon and Somerset more than doubles in past year

The latest statistics from Avon and Somerset Police show that the number of reported hate crime incidents against Muslims has doubled in the last year. While not all race-based hate crimes may be reported as an attack on a person’s faith, a local charity which supports victims of hate crimes has seen a rise in reports from Muslim clients over the last seven months with people of the Muslim faith making up over a third of all their clients.
Birthday bus confusion as some will have to wait a whole year before they get their free pass

At the end of October, West of England Metro Mayor Dan Norris announced that the free birthday month bus travel will be back for another year. Given the announcement was made in October applicants born in November applied thinking they would get their free pass but as the new scheme does not officially start until December 1. Around 72,000 people signed up for a pass when the scheme ran for the first time between August 2023 and July 2024 .
ACORN protests outside landlord’s shop over missing deposit for leaky flat

A protest was held this morning (December 6) outside a Bristol shop after the landlord refused to return his former tenant’s deposit. Aelisha Dickson, who was paying £1,300 a month for a basement studio flat, left the property two months ago after her landlord failed to fix a huge leak. "The carpet was so wet I couldn't take my shoes off in the house," explained Aelisha, who discovered a leak a month after moving into the flat.
Barclays Broadmead branch closes as a result of XR Youth protest

A group of around a dozen young activists have staged a second peaceful sit-in at the Bristol Broadmead branch of Barclays Bank. It follows their protest against the bank on October 31, the day it reopened after it closed to repair smashed windows.
