SignificanceThe physical pairing of chromosomes with their homologs is the basis of Mendelian genetics, but how chromosomes find each other is poorly understood, especially in cases where homolog pairing does not involve breaks in the DNA. We used a polymer model of chromosomes to show that adhesive patches, if distributed in a bar-code pattern, can produce selective homolog pairing even if every patch has the ability to bind any other patch with the same force.
