Tyme Marama Gould and Emily Fleming took over Frosty Moons in August. There’s an apparent irony in taking over an ice cream shop in the middle of winter and during an economic downturn. But for two best mates who have grown up in Whanganui’s hospitality scene; “It’s been so much fun”. Emily Fleming and Tyme Marama Gould took over Frosty Moons on Drews Ave in August, becoming business owners after almost a decade working in hospitality.

The residency allows professional artists to work alongside local assistants. Glass artist George Agius is using her New Zealand Glassworks residency to go bigger. Agius is the third artist to take up the residency programme and wants to explore the theme of residual wā - transitional spaces that exist between two people. “I’ve been dabbling in personal communication,” she said.

The Confucius Institute Performance at Lanterns on the Awa on Saturday night. Up to 6000 people lined the Whanganui River for Lanterns on the Awa on Saturday evening. The weather was a welcome relief for organiser Kai Lim, after the previous event in 2022 was postponed multiple times due to weather before eventually being held indoors. This time, the thousands of people soaked in the autumn evening air for the cultural extravaganza celebrating Chinese New Year.
