    A section of Highway 11 in Fort Frances is temporarily closed because of a nearby fire. The fire is at Armstrong Construction on Oakwood Drive. |The nature of the fire is unknown but smoke from the fire is drifting toward the highway, reducing visibility. The closure is between Pit Road 1 and Oakwood Drive. It is uncertain how long the road will be closed. Member of the Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Services are on the scene. We will have more information as it is made available.

    Ontario’s Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy is giving a hint about what to expect from the provincial budget. He delivers the fiscal document on Wednesday. Speaking at the Empire Club of Canada, Bethlenfalvy would not offer any specifics, but says it will look to thinking big and bold. “It’s about much more than just the tariff threats we are facing today,” says Bethlenfalvy.

    Riverside Health Care is reporting a respiratory outbreak at Rainy River Health Centre’s Long-Term Care area. This has led to restrictions on visitors, admissions and group activities. Residents are restricted to having no more than two visitors or caregivers in their room at one time. Riverside has been dealing with a number of outbreaks in recent weeks. A gastrointestinal outbreak at Rainycrest Long Term Care Home in Fort Frances has now been declared over, returning the facility to full function.

    The Salvation Army in Fort Frances is a nationally accredited food bank. The designation comes from Food Banks Canada, through its Standards of Excellence initiative. The program was established in 2024, creating certain standards for food banks. Auxiliary Captain Arthur Heathcote says being accredited ensures the highest health and safety standards are being met for the benefit of their clients.

    One of the two handi-transit buses owned by the town of Fort Frances is being replaced. The town is purchasing a new one, costing over $185,000 from Canadian firm Crestline Coach Limited. That is more than $35,000 than budgeted. The cost is covered through provincial gas tax money the town received each year. The new van should be in service by this September. One of the older ones, originally purchased in 2017, will eventually be sold at auction.
