Advance HE, which was previously known as the Higher Education Academy, is a UK-based charity and professional membership organization that supports high standards in higher education. It encourages teaching practices that are supported by research and provides fellowships to university educators as a mark of professional achievement. Established in 2003, the Higher Education Academy developed the UK Professional Standards Framework for those working in higher education. On March 21, 2018, it merged with the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education and the Equality Challenge Unit to create Advance HE.

Athena Swan Ireland launched in February 2015 with the goal of addressing gender inequality in the Irish higher education sector. Since then, all of Ireland’s universities and institutes of technology, as well as a number of colleges, have participated in the charter. This widespread take-up has resulted in 133 award holders across the country and significant impact on the sector.
Maynooth University's Department of Biology shifts the dial on work-life balance for postgraduate students

In 2018 the Department of Biology Athena Swan Committee identified significant issues surrounding work-life balance for postgraduate students in the department. As part of our Bronze Award Action Plan we amended our annual PhD progress forms to include prompts on work-life balance, career development, supervisory frequency and expectations around work hours.

Marcia Wilson is Pro Vice Chancellor for Student Experience and Institutional Equity at London Metropolitan University and one of approximately 6,000 women professors in the UK. She’s also one of just 66 women professors who happen to be Black. She was the first Black woman to participate in Advance HE’s Top Management Programme (TMP) for Higher Education, and the only Black person on her cohort last year.
Student solutions to problems with formative assessment

Submission rates for formative assessments continue to fall. Many students do not submit at all and others make no serious attempt, submitting drafts, notes, bullet-point lists or incomplete answers. Even though institutions emphasise the value of formative work and its contribution to later improvement in summative work, there has been little change to this downward trend.

The School of Natural Sciences, Trinity College Dublin, was awarded an Athena Swan Silver award in 2023. The School runs up to 20 residential student field trips each year. In the Athena Swan application we reported the development of a health and safety protocol that took due account of student wellbeing on field trips. The School of Natural Sciences includes the disciplines of Botany, Environmental Science, Geography, Geology and Zoology.

I learnt that Bahrain has recently implemented a pathway for students with vocational qualifications to access HE.
