Advance HE
Advance HE, which was previously known as the Higher Education Academy, is a UK-based charity and professional membership organization that supports high standards in higher education. It encourages teaching practices that are supported by research and provides fellowships to university educators as a mark of professional achievement. Established in 2003, the Higher Education Academy developed the UK Professional Standards Framework for those working in higher education. On March 21, 2018, it merged with the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education and the Equality Challenge Unit to create Advance HE.

Athena Swan Ireland launched in February 2015 with the goal of addressing gender inequality in the Irish higher education sector. Since then, all of Ireland’s universities and institutes of technology, as well as a number of colleges, have participated in the charter. This widespread take-up has resulted in 133 award holders across the country and significant impact on the sector.

In 2018 the Department of Biology Athena Swan Committee identified significant issues surrounding work-life balance for postgraduate students in the department. As part of our Bronze Award Action Plan we amended our annual PhD progress forms to include prompts on work-life balance, career development, supervisory frequency and expectations around work hours.
