Writer-director Vernon Zimmerman maintained that his 1980 film Fade to Black (his third and last feature as a director) wasn't a horror movie, and as I typically wouldn't do when I encounter a filmmaker who wants to make that claim, I think I'm going to let him have that one. Obviously, different people are going to have different hopes for what they're going to get out of something marketed as "horror", but I would mostly say that the things I hope for aren't really present in Fade to Black.

The 1981 fantasy film Dragonslayer was a major box office bomb, which isn't by itself surprising - movies bomb all the time - but it is one where its failure to find much of any audience would have surprised me at the time and surprises me to this day.
