December 20, 2024 – The holidays are often a season of reflection, but for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the scale of personal deliberation is reportedly going to be gargantuan, as he will decide whether or not to lead his party into an expected election this fall (or earlier) or to step aside for a new Liberal leader. Trudeau’s steadfast position that he would lead the party for one more election was evidently shaken by the resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland earlier this week.

December 16, 2024 – As the federal government prepares to update Canadians on its financial books heading into the new year, and Canadians begin to shop amidst a GST holiday, there are signs that the financial burdens on Canadian households of the previous years of inflation have eased but not fully abated.

December 11, 2024 – The year ends with some big bounces in approval for a couple of post-election premiers, and the continuation of a troubling trend for Quebec’s François Legault. The latest quarterly data on Canadians’ assessments of their province’s premiers from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute finds Manitoba Wab Kinew as the most positively appraised premier for the fifth quarter in a row. Two-thirds (67%) in Manitoba approve of Kinew’s performance as premier.

December 9, 2024 – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal federal government were hoping that two new proposals aimed at those struggling with the cost of living would earn them some holiday goodwill with Canadians. And while some are merry about the prospects of a forthcoming GST/HST holiday and a (now uncertain) one-time $250 cheque, many are greeting what is viewed as an “entirely political” move with a “bah humbug”.

December 5, 2024 – From Truth Social posts deriding the U.S. trade deficit with Canada, to this country’s fentanyl production and the resources allocated to monitoring what was once hailed as the globe’s “longest undefended border”, to dinners at Mar-a-Lago, followed by yet more Truth Social posts, this time featuring the Maple Leaf and … the Matterhorn … it has been a month of whiplash in the world of Canada-U.S. relations.
