Have you ever taken a close look at Austin’s crest? To the undiscerning eye, it may not appear to have much to do with the Capital City, so we’re here to share what its imagery means. The flag was designed by artist Ray F. Coyle from San Francisco, who received $50 in winnings, in a contest called by Mayor A. P. Wooldridge in 1915. The flag was adopted by the city council in 1919. Switchyards, aka Austin’s newest neighborhood work club, opens on Monday, June 23 in Hyde Park. Newsletter Editor Figi here — I got the inside scoop at Switchyards and toured the space yesterday. Here are some my favorite parts of the space. The light, airy space is thoughtfully decorated and has a “heads down” section for quiet work, phone rooms + a meeting room available for booking, and a community-focused open room for work.

Twin Oaks Shopping Center — aka the former site of the temporary H-E-B on South Congress Avenue — will soon be redeveloped. Located at the corner of East Oltorf Street and South Congress Avenue, the shopping center has been open since the 1950s but tenant rentership has been declining for years. Plans to redevelop the shopping center has been swirling since 2023.
