Nearly 300 passengers and crew had to evacuate a Delta flight Monday morning after fire erupted in an engine just before takeoff from Orlando International Airport. The 282 passengers, 10 flight attendants and two pilots evacuated via slides onto the tarmac, and no injuries were reported, Delta told the Daily News in an emailed statement. Flight 1213 was preparing to depart for Atlanta when flames started shooting out of a tailpipe, WFTV-TV reported.

Spirit Airlines has a new leader. The Broward-based carrier has turned to an aviation industry insider as it attempts to forge a new chapter after enduring bankruptcy woes and years of merger failures.. Spirit’s board of directors appointed Dave Davis as president and chief executive officer, the airline’s parent company said on Thursday. The jets may be flying farther north, but not everyone is hearing the difference. More than a month after the Federal Aviation Administration ( FAA) implemented revised flight paths for jets departing from Van Nuys Airport, airport officials say noise complaints from hillside neighborhoods including Encino, Sherman Oaks and Studio City have dropped by 66% – from about 160 complaints a day to just over 50. But some residents say the fix has just shifted the roar to other parts of the Valley.

Parking at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is about to get more expensive for some travelers, but some 400 workers are in for an even bigger rate hike late this year. Beginning Dec. 31, the Birmingham Airport Authority will require airline crew members to pay $10 a day to park in the economy lot, the commercial rate that’s charged to other visitors and passengers. That’s a 900% jump from the $1 rate those 400 workers have been paying to park while they fly on the job.

Romulus — Travelers with mobility issues or who have trouble walking long distances will have another option to get to their gates under a new pilot program unveiled Monday at Detroit Metro Airport's McNamara terminal: autonomous wheelchairs. For 90 days, 10 chairs, called WHILL devices, will be available to travelers as part of a partnership with Unifi. The chairs can drop off passengers at specific gates without an employee navigating them and stop if an obstacle is in the way.
