    A charming photo book by Vancouver-based photographer and designer Taylor Naoko and writer CJ Tuff. Taylor’s Okinawan background has deepened with age as she reflects on her hybrid identity and the influence her grandparents have had on her life. CJ was born in Japan but raised in Canada. Part of what drew him to working on this project was the opportunity to explore some of the lesser-seen areas of Tokyo. Place by Place perfectly captures the essence of Kissaten—traditional Japanese coffee shops.

    I listened to a podcast where you mentioned you were born in Mexico, came to Canada when you were 7, and then returned to Mexico for 2 more years before officially moving back to Canada. Can you talk a bit about that experience and how it affected your sense of home? Experiencing culture shock at such a young age was incredibly formative.

    What was the thing that got you started in photography? In my high school, every student had to choose an afterschool club to join. I chose the photography club, and after a year, our president asked me if I would like to teach a class in the club, he thought I was talented. This gave me a lot of confidence and made me start to take photography seriously.
