Carnegie Mellon Tartan

The Tartan, which was previously called The Carnegie Tartan, is the first student newspaper of Carnegie Mellon University. It has been in operation since 1906, making it one of the university's oldest and biggest student groups. Today, more than 170 students are involved, contributing content every week. The newspaper is supported by advertisements and funding from the university's student activities fee.

This week, I thought the Penguins played on Thursday, so I wore my Jake Shake t-shirt in support of the team, hoping that I could spirit my way into a half-priced dairy treat. I was actually incorrect, and the Penguins only played on Monday and Saturday. Here’s how it went:On Oct. 30, the Pens faced off against their fellow aquatic birds, the Ducks. Erik Karlsson opened scoring for Pittsburgh in the first, but he’d be answered by the Ducks a mere five minutes later.
The Tartan: Violins of Hope exhibit opens in Posner Center, calls community together

On Oct. 7, a new exhibit opened in the Posner Center. Violins of Hope: "Tuning Out Prejudice: Building Bridges that Last" showcases violins played by Jewish musicians before and during the Holocaust, highlighting the conditions in which music survived during and after the Holocaust. Created through collaboration between the community organization Violins of Hope Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Mellon Libraries Special Collections team, this unique exhibit will run until Nov. 21.

Every Halloween, the same questions surface: Is eating Halloween candy safe? Should I be checking Halloween candy for signs of tampering? If so, how? The prevalence of these questions is in large part the result of historical and continuing fears about Halloween candy safety. The FDA, for example, recommends only accepting commercially wrapped candies and then searching childrens’ candy for discoloration, pinholes, and tears.

Gee whiz, it sure has been a while, hasn’t it, gang? The Penguins have played so many games! I haven’t even seen you since the beginning of the season! On Oct. 2, The Tartan published an article that argued for the intrinsic connection between feminism and environmentalism. Author Veronica Michaels’ main thesis is that “it is the act of labeling nature as female that allowed for the continuous exploitation and destruction of it,” so we need to look toward women’s relationships with nature as we try to solve the climate crisis. To that point, I agree, and I think many useful and interesting points are made in the article.

The 2023 Nobel Prize winners were announced last week. Here is an overview of who won, what they studied, and a brief summary of what the Nobel Prizes are all about. What are the Nobel Prizes? The Nobel Prizes are a series of awards given out by a committee based in Norway and Sweden. Each year, six prizes are distributed for various disciplines. The prizes are as follows: medicine, physics, economic science, chemistry, literature, and peace work. Nobel Prizes can have multiple winners.

SciTech An annoying bug is taking over, and in this case, it’s not spotted lanternflies. It’s bedbugs, in Paris — yes, the city that will be hosting the Olympics next summer. People have found bedbugs hiding in hotels, hiding in vacation rental apartments, riding the intercity train, riding the Paris metro, watching a movie in a theater, starring on social media, and even stowing away on a ferry from Marseilles to Tangier, Morocco. (The ferry was deep-cleaned, so Moroccans can sleep soundly.

The Penguins certainly did play some hockey this week! It definitely went! On Monday, the Penguins returned to captain Sidney Crosby’s motherland of Nova Scotia to face off against the Senators. The Senators opened scoring eight minutes into the first and then scored again 10 minutes later to put the Pens down 0-2. After a scoreless second, and most of a scoreless third, the Pens pulled goaltender Tristan Jarry for an extra attacker.
