Last summer’s Congres Mondial Acadien has won an East Coast Music Award. The event in Yarmouth, Argyle and Clare received the ‘Event of the Year’ award during ECMA week in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Congres brought thousands of Acadians together last August, a large concert was held at the Yarmouth Airport on National Acadian Day. Then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre joined hundreds marching through the streets of Yarmouth before the concert.

A newly protected island off southwestern Nova Scotia for migratory birds. The Nova Scotia Nature Trust says Johns Island off Woods Harbour is a critical stopover for the birds on their journey. They say it’s significant, because it’s a nesting site for several bird species at risk too. A report in 2021 ranked the island as a high priority for sea level rise resiliency and habitat richness.

New electric vehicle chargers in Yarmouth. Four spaces will be created in the Brown Street parking lot, work begins next week. The town says installation is expected to take 4-6 weeks, with the lot partially closed at the Hawthorne Street entry. Six spaces will be fenced off, and the sidewalk on Hawthorne will also be blocked. The town says new parking spaces are being proposed to make sure there’s parking capacity. Yarmouth is one of 15 locations to receive the new charging stations.

The province is helping Yarmouth’s municipal building become more accessible. Over $500,000 will go toward renovations at the building on Hwy 1 in Hebron. It’s part of the GRID funding handed out last month. The municipality says the work is underway and will be completed this fall. In a statement, they say it’s great news for MODY and making their spaces more accessible to everyone.
