Creston Valley crews are getting considerable wildfire fighting experience. A wild Wednesday started at about 11:30 a.m.It involved a crew of 22 utilizing 11 fire trucks. They knocked down a 5-thousand square metre blaze in the Lakeview Arrow Creek area and spent several hours putting out hot spots. At about 3:30 in the afternoon, the Creston Fire Department got reports of smoke billowing out of the Corn Creek Valley.

Today’s hot temperature has triggered a temporary cooling station at the Creston Emergency Services Building, at 1505 Cook Street from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.While the forecasted weather highs don’t meet Environment Canada’s alerting parameters for issuing a heat warning in Creston, this is the first stretch of high temperatures of this season. “Warm weather can lead to some people overheating because they are not yet accustomed to warmer weather.” said the Town of Creston.

Residential real estate sales in May saw a slight decrease compared to the same time last year despite more homes on the market, reports the Association of Interior REALTORS® (the Association). A total of 1,482 residential unit sales were recorded across the Association region in May, coming in above April’s 1,317 units yet down 4 per cent from units sold in May last year. New listings dropped 2.7 per cent year-over-year with 3,581 new listings recorded last month.

Please note that these water conservation measures go into effect every year from June 1 to September 30, regardless of seasonal weather patterns. Drought levels in the Elk and Creston Valley are at level three out of five as the B.C. government opens up monitoring operations in the region. The B.C. River Forecast Centre says its scale measures local dryness, which ranges from zero (normal or wetter than normal conditions) to five (extreme, severe drought). Conditions may change in the weeks ahead as drought levels depend on several factors, including snowpack melt, precipitation and streamflow levels.
