Ax·is Mun·di– which translates as ‘centre of the earth’ – explores how pattern, observed and anticipated, can become a method of worlding: an ongoing, iterative act. Kambo’s development of this ensemble of practices was afforded through the expertise of BALTIC’s technical, curatorial, and production teams, emerging during her residency in the fourth-floor studio.

Aliyah Hussain is at an exciting point in her career. Recent successes include a solo exhibition at Lowry; being featured alongside works by Salvador Dali, Leonora Carrington and Jean Arp in The Hepworth’s, 100 Years of Surrealist Landscapes; and an Artist Fellowship at the UCLan ceramics department. A ceramicist who also works across sound, collage and digital, Hussain’s work constructs narratives out of abstract and ornate sculptural forms.

The format aims to showcase Northern artists alongside artists from further afield who’ve never shown in Salford before. As we enter Lowry’s Aldridge Studio for the performance of As I Am Naturally by Tania Camara, the song Brinka Cumi by Batuko Tabanka, a female Cape Verdean singing group, plays through speakers and fills the space. Although the stage is empty, a group of Black women already sits at the back of the auditorium, filling about two rows of seats. They wear white tops with flashes of African print.
