As we enter Lowry’s Aldridge Studio for the performance of As I Am Naturally by Tania Camara, the song Brinka Cumi by Batuko Tabanka, a female Cape Verdean singing group, plays through speakers and fills the space. Although the stage is empty, a group of Black women already sits at the back of the auditorium, filling about two rows of seats. They wear white tops with flashes of African print.

Wakefield-based artist Zoë Carlon’s solo exhibition of new paintings at South Parade in East London is playful and evocative. I felt the paintings call to me, inviting me into a series of intimate scenes, into the interior spaces of an imagination wandering in solitude. I didn’t feel I belonged in these places, but that I was being allowed temporary access for an encounter. Where and When You Are coincides with the publication of a selection of photographs taken by Carlon, Photographs 2020-2023.

Two women from different times connected through a shared sense of playfulness – that was my first impression on arriving at Barnsley Civic for Memories of Drawings/Ulterior Motifs. Both artists offer up flirtations with flatness – landscapes like scenes dropping in and out at the back of a stage. We fill in the blanks, enjoying the deceit. The first artist is Georgia O’Keeffe, the ‘Mother of American modernism’: furtive, contemplative.

Harcourt Road in Broomhill, Sheffield, is a quiet residential road. Travel from the top of the street and you’ll gently descend towards Crookes Valley Park, an undulating mound of green surrounding Sheffield’s Great Old Dam. The road is replete with hawthorn bushes and broadleaved trees, a leafy stretch home to a row of red brick Victorian terraced houses. In one window, a meticulously cut-out paper sign reads WELCOME.
