Fæthm, Fæþm – noun, m (nominative plural fæþmas):1. Outstretched arms; embrace, bosom. Kelham Island Museum takes its name from the spit of land it stands on, which is cradled by two arms of water just north of Sheffield city centre. The River Don is on the north side, a South Yorkshire waterway that is the central focus of fæthm. It rises in the Pennines and flows east through Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and many towns between until it joins the Ouse in the East Riding.

They could be ordinary suburban houses. The camera journeys along hallways decorated in inoffensive greys and beiges; we see kitchens, bedrooms, lounges and an exterior bearded with ice, as if filmed in the middle of a harsh winter. Gradually, though, we see things aren’t quite right. Among the soft furnishings, a huge, sculpted finger lurks, while fleshy-looking textiles drape themselves over the king-sized bed. Paintings of car accidents and apocalyptic wastelands hang, unassumingly, on the walls.

Patterns are a system of forms, rhythms, and refrains. Ax·is Mun·di– which translates as ‘centre of the earth’ – explores how pattern, observed and anticipated, can become a method of worlding: an ongoing, iterative act. Kambo’s development of this ensemble of practices was afforded through the expertise of BALTIC’s technical, curatorial, and production teams, emerging during her residency in the fourth-floor studio.
