This past spring the Kimberley Pipe Band joined a contingent of around 80 other pipers and drummers from around B.C. on a momentous journey to the Netherlands to commemorate the anniversary of the country's liberation from Nazi occupation in May of 1945. The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is urging residents to be aware and prepared after a flood watch was issued for the East Kootenay on Thursday, June 19. "The RDEK’s Flood Response Unit will be monitoring conditions through the weekend and the RDEK is encouraging residents who live in flood-prone areas to take steps to be prepared in the event the region does experience localized flooding," an RDEK spokesperson said in a Thursday press release.

Interior Health has identified the McDonalds restaurant in Sparwood, as a site of exposure to measles. In a Facebook post on June 17, Interior Health noted a visitor to B.C who went to the McDonalds in Sparwood on June 8, has a case of measles. There are currently no cases of measles originating with the Interior Health region, as the McDonalds visitor came from outside the area.

The Elk Valley Accessibility Plan was officially endorsed by three local councils in May, paving the way for development of more comprehensive services and support systems for residents with physical disabilities and limitations. The Regional Accessibility Committee formed in November 2023 with representation from Fernie, Sparwood and Elkford councils, aiming to reduce barriers within Elk Valley communities for people with mobility issues.
