A provincial all-party finance committee got an earful from locals on a stop in Cranbrook, while touring through the province to solicit feedback on priorities for the 2026 provincial budget. Held at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort in Cranbrook, presentations included representatives from College of the Rockies, Regional District of East Kootenay, Southeast Kootenay School District (SD5), Canadian Mental health Association, Invasive Species Council, and 4H.

Firefighters quickly knocked down a small wildfire on the northeast outskirts of Cranbrook on June 10th. City of Cranbrook firefighters and BC Wildfire Service personnel responded to a small 30 metre by 60 metre wildfire that was beginning to take off as crews arrived.  Six members from the Cranbrook Fire Department and four members from BC Wildfire Services worked collaboratively to control the blaze.

Cranbrook’s ongoing work on ‘Choose Cranbrook’, a purpose-built website for economic development in the City, won the 2025 Marketing Innovation Award from the BC Economic Development Association (BCEDA) at this year’s annual conference in Penticton. The ‘Choose Cranbrook’ campaign includes strong visuals and video storytelling to engage investors, support newcomers and highlight regional partnerships as a marketing and investment attraction strategy.

Without significant precipitation through the late spring and early summer, residents can expect continued below-average water availability from the City’s watershed this year. During a recent city council meeting, staff noted that the snowpack on Moyie Mountain sits at 32 per cent of normal as of May 15, down significantly from 62 per cent as recorded at the beginning of May.

The RDEK is receiving $320,000 from the provincial government in support of its emergency operations centre, which manages emergencies such as wildfires and floods that threaten communities across the East Kootenay region. "Local emergency operations centres (EOC) are crucial in co-ordinating response efforts and safeguarding communities during emergencies," said Kelly Greene, Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness.
