Namely, what to do with a $15 million contribution from Elk Valley Resources (EVR). South Country firefighters responded to a fire at the former Galloway mill site on June 10. “The fire was confined to a log pile and we took immediate action to suppress it and fully wet it down,” said Ben Goertzen, Elk Valley & South Country Rural Fire Deputy Chief. “There was no risk of spread and our team did an excellent job of quickly extinguishing the fire.” Fire response included 14 members from the Elko, Jaffray and Baynes Lake Fire Departments and six pieces of apparatus.

Work is underway for a business case for the long-term future of Amy Woodland Elementary School — a process that is expected to take 12-15 months. Formally called a Project Definition Report (PDR), the process will dig into three core options for the future of the school, which include a replacement with a smaller school footprint, a rebuild of the damaged areas, or permanent expansion of neighbouring school sites to accommodate displaced students.
