Eight. That seems to be the magic number right now. Its the number of games the Dallas Stars have lost in a row. Coincidentally, its the same number of playoff series in which the Stars have lost the opening game. In a row. After game one, I jokingly tweeted about it: Death, taxes and the Stars losing game 1 of a playoff series— Greg Higgins (@greghiggins457) April 20, 2025Problem is this isn’t a joke anymore. And every Stars fan can agree that losing isn’t fun.

Injuries be damned. That seems to be the attitude of the Dallas Stars lately. An injury happens and next man up is the mantra. This team is on a good run right now because of this, too. Since the injury to Miro Heiskanen, the Stars have won seven of their ten games. The team has scored at least four goals in their last six games. Dallas has nine different players with double-digit goals this season (one of those is Mikael Granlund). Logan Stankoven just needs one goal to join this group as well.

Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill has negotiated a trade for two name-brand players that should help his injured team complete their trek to the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs – and make a splash once they’re there. The San Jose Sharks swapped 32-year-old forward Mikael Granlund and 31-year-old blueliner Cody Ceci for two of the Stars’ picks in the 2025 NHL Draft – the first-rounder, plus a conditional third-rounder.

This season’s Dallas Stars are…really, really Stars-ing. Right now, that’s largely for the better. That doesn’t keep any of us for looking for where they can be better still…but at what cost? What impact can the right forward have? Can even the most dynamic forward compensate for not having another difference-making defender? At what point, if any, does a successful GM compromise his long-term vision for a player who can alter the course of a seven-game series?
