Edible Manhattan

Edible Manhattan

Edible Manhattan explores the culinary landscape of the city, highlighting its unique food culture. It is part of the Edible New York family, which includes various Edible publications and platforms throughout North America. We seek to uncover hidden food stories, from a bialy shop in Chelsea to a mangu vendor in Washington Heights. Our focus extends to artisans, cooks, and chefs who craft their own aquavit or cured meats, as well as local factories and shops known for their culinary specialties, regardless of their size. We also shine a light on impactful trends that are reshaping the city’s approach to food, along with community gardens and rooftop farms that nourish New York City.

Friendly, with a distinctive beard and unkempt hair so thick and wild you cannot see his eyes, nor he yours, Star is an Italian water dog. He is the truffle-hunter extraordinaire at Star Hill Farm, the 1,100-acre homeplace to the Maker’s Mark Distillery, which keeps a steady flow of tours and is a necessary stop on the state’s Bourbon Trail.

There was a time when you could judge a coffee shop by the menu. The best cafés had the simplest drinks, with nothing more baroque on offer than a latte—and even that was treated with some snobby skepticism. In part, it was a way to underscore the difference between the independent shops that put quality first and the branded franchises that sold syrupy milkshake-like drinks to the masses.

In recent years, nonprofits and journalists have exposed serious labor abuses on cacao farms across the chocolate-producing world, prompting widespread reform in the industry.
