The owners of the former Beachside Bar & Grill have won approval to transform their partially demolished structure on South Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas into a two-story restaurant. “We’re really excited to get going on this — I know it’s been an eyesore for everybody,” property co-owner Darrin Campbell told the Planning Commission on Thursday, June 6.

A man whom many people referred to as the “Bee Guy of Encinitas” because of his passionate advocacy for pollinators has died. “With a heavy heart, I’m sad to share that James Conor McDonald, my older brother by three years, passed away on Monday eve,” his brother Bryan McDonald recently posted on a Facebook page.
Encinitas sales tax increase will go on November ballot

Encinitas voters will decide in November whether to increase the city’s sales tax by 1 percent. In a 4-1 vote, with Councilmember Bruce Ehlers opposed, the City Council decided Wednesday, May 22, to put the item on the Nov. 5 ballot. Adding 1 percent to the city’s 7.75 percent tax rate is expected to generate an extra $15.4 million yearly in revenue. How that money will be spent won’t be spelled out in the proposed ballot measure, the council decided.

Instead of banning natural gas hookups in new homes as originally planned, Encinitas may strengthen its energy efficiency requirements to encourage the construction of all-electric structures. An ordinance proposing to do this won initial approval from the City Council May 15 in a 4-1 vote, with Councilmember Bruce Ehlers voting against. Ehlers said he wanted the ordinance to also include new standards for buildings that are taller than three stories.

An effort to find a new fire station site in Olivenhain and a project to give the city a native plant ordinance will both receive funding in the city’s next budget. The Encinitas City Council approved two spending requests Wednesday, May 15, during the official public unveiling of the proposed budget for the new fiscal year, which begins July 1.

A nearly $6 million bond sale to fund the city’s purchase of a prime coastal habitat area will take place starting this week, a financial consultant handling the effort reports. Branden Kfoury, a director with the municipal financial advisory company Urban Futures Inc., told the Encinitas City Council on Wednesday, April 17, that all is proceeding according to plan. Encinitas began the process of purchasing the 1.43-acre site last fall.

Encinitas will fund the construction of native plant demonstration gardens in the coming fiscal year, but it won’t pay for a consultant to produce a city ordinance spelling out how native plants should be used generally. At a special budget-setting workshop Wednesday, April 17, the City Council split over the consultant issue. Councilwomen Joy Lyndes and Kellie Hinze voted in favor, while Mayor Tony Kranz, Councilman Bruce Ehlers and Councilwoman Allison Blackwell voted against.
