The largest US natural gas producer by volume assured investors today that the pace of US gas production is appropriate relative to demand, despite benchmark prices hitting fresh three-year lows this week. Shell said today it will withdraw from talks to build a petrochemicals plant in Iraq's southern oil hub of Basra after nearly 10 years of trying to get the project off the ground, dealing a blow to Baghdad's aim of driving foreign investment in its energy sector. "After in-depth evaluation on the feasibility of the Nebras integrated petrochemicals complex with our government partners, Shell has decided not to proceed with the project," Shell said.

UN climate summit Cop 28 president Sultan al-Jaber has set up a group — dubbed the troika — linking the UAE presidency with the Cop 29 Azerbaijan and Cop 30 Brazil presidencies in a bid to maintain political momentum into 2025. The US Senate today approved President Joe Biden's request for a massive military aid package for Ukraine and Israel, while the Republicans in the House of Representatives vowed to reject it. The Senate measure would allocate around $60bn in military aid for Ukraine, $14bn for Israel, in addition to providing $9bn in humanitarian aid to Gaza and other global crisis spots. The bill is substantially the same as requested by Biden in October, but it took an unusual journey to getting approved.

South Korean battery manufacturer SK On has secured the option to source natural graphite anode products from US-based mineral company Westwater Resources through a conditional offtake agreement. The expanded partnership comes after the two firms agreed last year to jointly develop anode materials that will be customised for SK On's batteries.
