Grunion Gazette
Gazette Newspapers has established itself as the leading provider of local news and information in the upscale southeast area of Long Beach, California. It all began in 1978 with the Grunion Gazette, a small weekly publication serving the Belmont Shore community. In 1981, Fran and John Blowitz took over the paper and transformed it into the primary news source for east Long Beach. By 1988, they expanded their reach by launching the Downtown Gazette. In January 2004, the Blowitzes sold the Gazettes to MediaNews, a major player in the newspaper industry that also owns the Los Angeles Daily News, the Denver Post, and over 200 other publications, under the leadership of owner Dean Single.
