Our unbiased reporting, available online and through public radio, highlights how concerns related to costs, quality, and access to health care impact every resident of Florida. Established in 2006, Health News Florida became part of WUSF Public Media in Tampa in September 2012. By October 2014, we broadened our coverage by adding reporters from WLRN in Miami and WMFE in Orlando.

The Jacksonville Beach City Council on Monday unanimously voted in favor of a smoke-free beach, bringing it in line with other Jacksonville-area beaches that ban smoking. The ban includes cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, electronic pens, e-cigarettes and any other lighted tobacco or electronic vaping product. Public comment from residents, health officials and the group Students Working Against Tobacco cited potential hazards of exposure to second-hand smoke and vaper in public spaces.

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday said he plans to sign into law a bill that bans the use of fluoride in public water systems across the state. When it becomes law July 1, local governments are prohibited from using fluoride or other health additives to municipal water supplies, a practice that's been in place for decades to fortify dental hygiene.
