ELIZABETHTON — Carter County may soon issue $40 million in bonds to pay for repairing and replacing all the county roads and county bridges that were damaged and destroyed by Hurricane Helene. On Monday evening, the Budget Committee of the Carter County Commission voted unanimously to recommend that bond issue to the full commission during its next regularly scheduled meeting.

Washington County commissioners will be asked later this month to issue as much as $75 million in capital notes to pay for flood recovery. Consultants say the plan is to issue the infrastructure debt for a 10-year term, with the notes being retired once the county is reimbursed for its storm damages by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. At least $55 million of that debt would go pay to rebuilding roads and bridges and for relocating county services destroyed by the Sept.

GATE CITY – A second delay will affect cleanup of debris from hurricane Helene in Gate City. Town Manager Greg Jones told Town Council at Tuesday’s meeting that state contractors brought to town in March to remove land debris left without notice the middle of the same month.
