Mayville State women’s basketball coach Ryan Carpenter recently announced the hiring of Dylan Schmit to the Comets coaching staff. Schmit brings experiences from Division I and Division II to the job. Schmit replaces Claire Canahuate, who left MSU to accept an assistant coaching position at the University North Dakota.

Payton Richter, a former volleyball standout, has been hired as an assistant coach for the Comets, head coach Elora Passa announced Wednesday. Richter, originally from Casselton, N.D., and a former teammate of Passa’s, played five seasons for MSU from 2019 through 2023 and was a North Star Athletic Association Champion of Character selection in 2023. Richter was a setter and a defensive specialist, where she tallied a career total of 1,055 digs and 423 assists.

Mayville State concluded its men’s and women’s golf season by participating in the final North Star Athletic Association Championship, held at Woodland Hills Golf Course in Eagle, Neb. A highlight for the Comet men was freshman Satchel Tickel being selected to the all-conference first team. Tickel is MSU’s first all-conference golfer since Kory Bartels in 1991. Damian Pokrzywinski and Masen Nowacki were named to the second team. Tickel was the top finisher for Mayville State.

Mayville State may have exited the final North Star Athletic Association baseball tournament after three games, but the Comets provided the biggest headline on the first day. On May 1 at Dakota Community Bank & Trust Ballpark in Dickinson, the No. 7-seeded Comets outlasted No.2 seed Jamestown 12-11. MSU faced No. 3 seed Dickinson State on May 2 and lost 7-6. The Comets were eliminated on May 3 with a 16-6 loss to Dakota State (S.D.). The Comets finished their season at 15-30.

After winning a loser-out game, Mayville State was eventually eliminated from the final North Star Athletic Association postseason softball tournament, played May 1-3 at Bravera Field in Dickinson. The No. 5-seeded Comets (11-37) fell 8-5 to No. 4 seed Valley City State, but bounced back the next day with a 3-0 victory over No. 3 seed Bellevue. In a second elimination game, MSU met Valley City State again on May 3, losing 17-3 to the Vikings.
