GRAND FORKS – MayPort-CG sophomore Nora Braaten had a pair of top-five finishes at the Red River Valley Conference Indoor meet at the University of North Dakota April 4. The sprinter finished second in the 60-meter dash last Friday, crossing the line in 8.38 seconds, a personal best for the young runner. She joined sophomores Zoey Mehus, Ella Flaten and senior Kayla Knudsvig as part of the girls 4x300-meter relay, which took third at the meet in a time of 3:11.12.
Florida man eyes Hillsboro’s mobile home park

Residents living in Hillsboro’s mobile home court may receive individual water bills from the city in the future. The Hillsboro City Commission on Monday heard from Jimmy Johnson, a potential new owner of the mobile home park in Hillsboro. Johnson, a Florida resident, owns 13 mobile home facilities in Minnesota, including in New Ulm and Mankato, and has around another dozen properties across the country.
TCHS planning Traill’s 150th birthday

The Traill County Historical Society is gearing up for the 150th birthday celebration of Traill County. John Wright, president of the TCHS board, said a number of activities are planned for the event in June. A special edition of the Hillsboro Banner is planned for the event, along with tours of landmarks across the county. “On June 14, we will have open houses at the courthouse and museum to celebrate the 150th of the county,” Wright said.
Back on track, Pats’ Saastad makes podium in 400M, 200M and 60M dash

GRAND FORKS – Keaton Saastad’s debut on the track this spring blew away his season-opening time from a year ago. The MayPort-CG senior finished sixth in the 200-meter dash Friday, March 28, at the Dick Clay Open indoor meet at the University of North Dakota. His time of 23.28 seconds was more than a second a half faster than his 24.82 mark he set in his first meet as a junior on the same track. Saastad also finished third in the 400-meter run and fourth in the 60-meter dash last week.
Shorthanded Patriots crew opens season at UND indoor track meet

GRAND FORKS – A handful of MayPort-CG athletes debuted last week in the first track meet of the season. With 25 teams in attendance, the Patriots boys tallied two points and the MPCG girls finished with 4.5 to open the year March 21 at the Mike Grandall Open indoor meet at the University of North Dakota. “I felt like we had practiced for so long that it was just time to compete and see where we were at,” said second-year coach Tressta Kunkel.
Central Valley students claim another state Acalympics title

For the third time in five years, Central Valley’s academic team leads the state. The rural Buxton school’s squad edged five other Class B small schools, scoring 11 points in the lightning round to take first place in the state North Dakota Association of Secondary School Principals Acalympics competition Tuesday in Bismarck.

Last year, Keaton Saastad entered his first season of track and field as a virtual unknown around the state. Now, the MayPort-CG senior sprinter has his sights set for the top of the podium. Saastad, the defending fourth-place finisher in the state Class B 200-meter dash and sixth in the 400, opens his season today (Friday) alongside his Patriots teammates at the Mike Grandall Open at the Fritz Pollard Athletic Center in Grand Forks.
Hillsboro city leaders updated on plans for new fire hall, honor former fire chief

Representatives from Hillsboro Fire & Rescue told Hillsboro city commissioners that a new fire hall being built south of the city’s armory will be slightly smaller than previously planned. Hillsboro Fire Chief Jake Rust told the commission Monday night that Foss Architecture & Interiors in Fargo found several issues with a proposed second story for the new building, opting instead to make the structure a single-level 85-foot by 220-foot facility.

Keith Williams came from a military family. His mother and father were both lieutenants in the U.S. Army, and his uncles all served in the Army. After spending more than 20 years serving in the Army himself, Williams is hoping to spread thanks to his fellow local veterans. The Mayville Senior Center will be hosting a Salute to our Veterans service from 2 to 4 p.m., on Saturday, March 15.
Patriots seventh-grader Satrom is first MPCG girls state placer

FARGO – Seeded No. 8 at 100 pounds, Evie Satrom had big goals of placing in last week’s state girls wrestling tournament. Despite being a seventh-grader, the MayPort-CG youngster showed poise beyond her years and finished sixth out of 16 wrestlers at the event Feb. 21 at the Fargodome. She made history as the first girls state placer for MayPort-CG. “Evie came through the back side of the bracket to beat a lot of good wrestlers,” said Patriots coach Gary Mueller.
