Come July 1, the Syracuse Orange and other athletics departments around the country have been preparing to begin directly paying their athletes for the first time in the history of college sports. But things are in a state of flux right now, experts say. That's because the federal judge overseeing the House v. NCAA settlement, Claudia Wilken, has yet to issue a final ruling on whether the landmark settlement is approved or not.

Over the past few days, Syracuse basketball 2026 priority target Deron Rippey Jr. from Brooklyn, N.Y., was overseas in Italy at a showcase event put on by Adidas. As much as I admire Fran Brown for what he did in the 2024 season, his first campaign as Syracuse football's head coach, I respect him more for who he is as a person, and his leadership away from the field. I've written several columns on this theme, and I'm doing it again today, because Coach had a lovely post on X this past Saturday that simply reiterated my feelings about Brown. I know that many other Orange fans feel the same way about him. Brown is a lovely blend of no-nonsense and kindness.

Syracuse basketball coaches are still on the lookout for their first verbal pledge in the team's 2026 class. Might four-star small forward Vaughn Karvala from Wisconsin ultimately be the Orange's first verbal commit among rising high school seniors? We'll have to wait and see. But when I glanced at the On3 Web site on Sunday, it did seem like the 'Cuse is in a good spot for the 6-foot-6 wing/small forward, a fast-rising prospect in the 2026 cycle.
