LA Progressive

Dick and Sharon are the editors and publishers of the LA Progressive, a platform they established to elevate progressive voices in Los Angeles. They also created and host The Left Coast Forum, an annual gathering that brings together progressive activists, scholars, organizers, filmmakers, media professionals, and others dedicated to analyzing and transforming systems of oppression. The LA Progressive was launched in 2008 with the goal of highlighting progressive viewpoints on current events. Its mission is to offer a space for diverse progressive thoughts and opinions. This publication is proud to practice advocacy journalism, prioritizing the public interest over corporate agendas. A talented group of writers contributes to the LA Progressive, producing around 45 articles each week. Along with editing and publishing, Dick and Sharon also contribute their own writings. The LA Progressive addresses a wide range of progressive topics, focusing on both national and international issues, while giving special attention to local concerns in Los Angeles, where the publication is based.

April was a momentous month in the American Civil War. On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to General Ulysses Grant, commander of the Union forces at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, marking the culmination of the war. Over the next two months, the remaining Confederate troops were defeated and surrendered by the end of May.
