    PORTLAOISE Order of Malta recently cut the ribbon on their brand new headquarters. The new building in the IDA Business Park on the Mountrath Road will secure the future of the local Order of Malta cadets and senior units, and in so doing ensure they can continue to support the local community. The new HQ will also allow the Order to continue offering training courses to groups and members of the public.

    LAOIS band ‘Alright Then’ has been added to the line-up of the Night and Day Festival in June. The festival, from Friday to Sunday 27 to 29 June, will also see such acts as KT Tunstall, The Wailers, Kerbdog, The Stunning, Paul Brady, Sultans of Ping and Fionn Regan performing. The Portarlington based band of Conor McLoughlin, Colm Geraghty and Cillian Deegan booked their spot on the festival line-up after they were the overall winners the Night and Day song contest.

    THE Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) has formally put Laois County Council on notice of its intention to seek planning permission to construct a 1,000 pupil secondary school in Portlaoise. The development is on lands at Downes, Borris Little and Mellick in Portlaoise.

    Seán McCárthaighA nephew of the late Aslan singer, Christy Dignam, died from an overdose of cocaine, an inquest has heard. Chris Dignam-Healy (27), a father of two from Ashbourne, Co Meath died in the emergency department at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin on January 23rd, 2023. The young man had been brought to the hospital by ambulance after he became unwell with a suspected heart attack while visiting an apartment in Gracepark Manor, Whitehall, Dublin.
