CFI 65 Roses Day takes place across Laois, today

THE PEOPLE of Laois are urged to dig deep to help Cystic Fibrosis Ireland (CFI) meet its fundraising target of €300,000 on 65 Roses Day. This major fundraising event is taking place, today Friday 11 April, when volunteers across the country will be selling purple roses to support CFI in Dunnes Stores branches, shopping centres and other participating outlets. Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system.

A PRIZE giving ceremony for transition year students who participated in the Graduate.ie Online Citizenship Programme saw Portlaoise College student Clodagh Fitzpatrick from Portlaoise College take home the top prize. The overall prize which was sponsored by the MRDATF was for one selected student from Laois who participated fully in the initiative to attend a three-day educational trip to Strasbourg.

For the past four years, Toney Ryan from Pike of Rushall, along with his wife Margaret, daughter Niamh and other family members were joined by a hard-working committee from Friends of Portlaoise Hospital to help organise the Road to Recovery Truck Run in aid of two hospitals who supported him through a difficult period in his life.

A LAOIS woman who has been reunited with a precious diamond from her engagement ring after it fell after her hand got in a vent on the train she was travelling on. Aisling Kavanagh was undertaking her regular commute back to Portlaoise from Heuston two weeks ago, when she inadvertently caught her hand in the vent beside her seat onboard the train.

A PUBLIC meeting in Portlaoise Parish Centre will discuss the absence of a Meals on Wheels service in the town since June 2023. The meeting, which is scheduled for Monday 3 March at 7.30pm, will discuss how to address the lack of this vital service in the town. Attendees will include local councillors, TDs and representatives of the National Meals on Wheels Network.

PUPILS from a Laois primary school were among the winners at this year’s FÍS Film Awards. Students from Gaelscoil Shlí Dála picked up the Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking gong for In partnership with the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT), and hosted by RTÉ’s Sinead Kennedy, the ceremony aimed to inspire and celebrate the creativity of future filmmakers. The pupils who entered the short movie-making contest were honoured last week for their outstanding work and creativity.

The annual competition, which was held in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel on Monday 10 February, showcased the remarkable talent of young students from the community. A team from Shanahoe NS claimed first prize in one of the two sections.
Portlaoise student impresses at international swimming event

A LAOIS teenager put in an impressive performance while representing Ireland at a junior swimming competition in Lisbon last week. Yifei Li, a second-year student at Portlaoise College, who recently won gold in the 400m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley at the Leinster Schools Swimming Championships, competed in the 50m, 200m and 400 freestyle events in Portugal.
