    THE first of the Portlaoise Spotlight Sessions took place in Dunamaise Arts Centre recently. Singers, songwriters, poets and creatives travelled from all corners of Laois and beyond to attend an evening dedicated to sharing original music and spoken word. Turning the concept of the traditional open mic on its head, the event focused on celebrating original work, with pieces performed for the very first time, tunes created on the spot and original music and voice filling the room.

    THE PEOPLE of Laois are urged to dig deep to help Cystic Fibrosis Ireland (CFI) meet its fundraising target of €300,000 on 65 Roses Day. This major fundraising event is taking place, today Friday 11 April, when volunteers across the country will be selling purple roses to support CFI in Dunnes Stores branches, shopping centres and other participating outlets. Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system.

    A PRIZE giving ceremony for transition year students who participated in the Graduate.ie Online Citizenship Programme saw Portlaoise College student Clodagh Fitzpatrick from Portlaoise College take home the top prize. The overall prize which was sponsored by the MRDATF was for one selected student from Laois who participated fully in the initiative to attend a three-day educational trip to Strasbourg.
