HARD hats and high-vis vests were all the rage when pupils from the Doonane and Crettyard areas of Laois who attend Newtown National School were given a guided tour of the Breedon Ireland quarry site in Spink as part of Biodiversity Week. The company deals in construction materials and provides materials to Great Britain, Ireland and the United States. Its Irish operations are headed up by the former all-Ireland GAA medal winner and manager of the Dublin Senior Gaelic Football team Pat Gilroy.

A PUPIL from Saint Fiacc’s National School in Laois was among the winners at an annual national awards ceremony recently. Sixth class pupil Tia Keating was named as an overall winner in the Green-Schools Poster Competition and received the award at the ceremony that was held in Dublin.

A PORTLAOISE man who was injured in the Liverpool parade horror crash has spoken of the distressing scenes he witnessed on the day. Father of three Gary Hearns said that he along with his father-in-law Anthony Dunphy had flown over to see the title winning premiership match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace on the Sunday before the parade.
