IN a statement issued following the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis Laois TD Sean Fleming expressed his deep sadness over his death. Deputy Fleming said: “Like millions of people around the world, I was deeply saddened to hear that His Holiness Pope Francis passed away. “I was very privileged that my wife Mary and I had a private audience with Pope Francis in the Vatican on Friday 6 December 2024.

AN issue of spot flooding caused by blocked drains after heavy rainfall in Ballinakill is to be addressed. Cllr Marie Tuohy raised the concerns of people in the locality at the April meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District Council meeting. She said that the road is used by lorries traveling to and from Booth’s Quarry concrete facility and “culverts are blocked, which is causing the drains and stream to overflow. When it rains heavy the road gets flooded, and is dangerous.

A NUMBER of trees that were hit badly by the severe winds during Storm Éowyn in January are causing major concern to people living in the Beladd Upper area of Portlaoise and now a councillor has called for them to be removed. Cllr Marie Tuohy said that locals had serious concerns that they would fall. She said that during Storm Éowyn a Beech tree fell across the road, “and thankfully nobody was injured. But there’s a couple more that are dodgy looking and residents are concerned about them.

INDOOR bowling is fast becoming a popular sport in Laois with a growing number of clubs and members joining. Last week saw the indoor league finals takes place in Vicarstown Hall, which were hosted by Vicarstown Indoor Bowling Club. Teams from Portlaoise, Monasterevin, St. Joseph’s Castlemitchel, Vicarstown, Timahoe, Abbey Bowls Clough/Ballacolla and St. John’s Athy Indoor Bowling Clubs competed for the annual league winners title and the Kelly Lou Cakes Perpetual Trophy.

LAOIS Co Council staff are to keep on eye on the electric car charging parking spaces in the new car park at the railway station in Portlaoise to ensure motorists are not parking all day in the spaces. It has also been revealed that those who prepay for a monthly parking ticket to use the car park are not guaranteed a space when they arrive at morning times.
