Jared Polis had decided to fulfill, and he prohibited the governor from directing a senior state employee and his staff from turning over personal information to authorities. But District Judge A. Bruce Jones said he wouldn't block Polis or other state officials from otherwise responding to the subpoena.

    A former Kansas corrections officer has been arrested on suspicion of child sex crimes, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said. Brice Berk, 36, of Concordia, was arrested Monday afternoon after he turned himself in to the Republic County Sheriff’s Office. He was booked into jail on suspicion of 12 counts of sexual exploitation of a child, a KBI news release said. “The crimes allege Berk possessed and distributed child pornography,” according to the KBI.

    A 21-year-old man died Monday morning after a pickup truck ran a red light and struck an SUV in southeast Kansas. He was identified as Matthew Westhoff-Strode of Girard, a Kansas Highway Patrol crash log shows. The crash was reported at 7 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 69 and U.S. 160 highways in Frontenac. A 16-year-old was heading south on U.S. 69 in a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500. At the same time, Westhoff-Strode was eastbound on E. 590 Ave. in a 2022 Kia Soul, according to the crash report.
