Livingston County News
Livingston County News is a celebrated weekly newspaper and community website that has been serving the residents of Livingston County and the Western Finger Lakes since 1989. Initially launched as a print newspaper, The LCN has grown into a comprehensive media organization that includes video production, a vibrant online presence with its website and social media channels, and specialized publications focusing on local business and agriculture. The dedicated team has earned numerous accolades for their writing, photography, and advertising efforts. The first issue of Livingston County News hit the stands on May 4, 1989, following an intense six-week preparation period. The inaugural front page featured news about Livonia Town Supervisor Daniel C. West's resignation to assume a role with the Rochester region office of the state Workers Compensation Board, along with reports of a measles outbreak at SUNY Geneseo. It also included a touching story about the local dog shelter. At the time of its launch, starting a print newspaper was a bold venture. The late 1980s and early 1990s saw rising costs for newsprint, and many newspapers were searching for ways to reduce expenses due to decreasing revenues and a crowded media landscape. However, a marketing study revealed that the residents of Livingston County craved more local news, prompting the Johnson Newspaper Corp., its sole owner, to meet that demand. The early years posed challenges in building readership and recognition. By the mid-1990s, the paper began to gain momentum, experiencing a remarkable increase in circulation, which doubled in under a year. While traditional weekly newspapers were published once a week, the advent of the digital age has transformed this model. Today, The LCN maintains an up-to-date website, an active Twitter account sharing links to current headlines, and a Facebook page that engages readers with stories relevant to Livingston County, fostering interaction among the community. The LCN has become the premier news outlet in Livingston County, earning respect from both its readership and other media outlets. It has been recognized as the county’s favorite media source for three consecutive years in a poll conducted by the Livingston County Area Chamber of Commerce. The publication's success is driven by a commitment to meet the community's thirst for news, delivering quality journalism from reporters who have a deep understanding of the area.

As a graduate student working out of Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History, evolutionary biologist Shane DuBay noticed soot clinging to the bird specimens he handled. Like many researchers, he long regarded these collections kept by museums as windows into biodiversity. But that moment made him wonder if bird feathers could also map the historic arc of industrial pollution.
