No. 3 San Diego Clairemont edged No. 2 Santa Ynez 25-20, 24-26, 25-21, 19-25, 15-13 in the Southern Regional of the CIF State Boys Volleyball Playoffs at Santa Ynez Thursday night. The Pirates finished 22-4. Santa Ynez won the Central Section Division 2 championship as the No. 8 seed. The Chieftains (28-10) won the San Diego Section Division 2 championship. Santa Ynez senior setter Manny Sanchez racked up 60 assists. Nate Biron led the Pirates in kills with 22.

Hancock College wide receiver Makai Puga has signed with Cal Poly. "I've always wanted to go to Cal Poly, because I felt like that school would allow me to do what I love - play football - while pursuing my degree at a school known for academics and staying close to my family," Puga said in a Hancock news release. "I've kind of always envisioned myself playing for the Mustangs, and I feel very blessed to have the opportunity."Cal Poly competes in the Big Sky Conference in the NCAA's Division 1.

The Santa Ynez boys volleyball team advanced in the Division 3 Southern Regional of the CIF state playoffs with a 3-0 sweep of Lake Forest El Toro in the first round at Santa Ynez Tuesday night. Set scores were 25-23, 25-18, 25-17. Santa Ynez moved through in the state playoffs after winning the Central Section Division 2 championship as the No. 8 seed. The Pirates won 3-2 at No. 6 Fresno Sanger West last Thursday night for the sectional Division 2 title.
