Matichon Newspapers & Online
Matichon (Thai: มติชน), often referred to as Matichon Daily to differentiate it from its other publications, is a prominent Thai-language daily newspaper. It was established in 1978 by a collective of forward-thinking writers during a time when Thailand was transitioning away from an authoritarian regime following the tragic events of the 6 October 1976 Massacre. Matichon aims to be a "quality" newspaper, catering to an upscale readership, in contrast to the more sensationalist publications that dominate the mass market. By 1997, its daily circulation reached approximately 120,000. The newspaper is well-known for its strong emphasis on political reporting and, alongside Thai Rath, was one of the most politically significant newspapers in the country during that period.
