As part of the ongoing paving project, the Ballard Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic this weekend. This work is part of the 15th Ave W/NW & Ballard Bridge Paving & Safety Project, which was delayed last fall due to rain. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) says the full closures are necessary to allow crews to work safely and efficiently on the Ballard Bridge and the nearby Leary Way Bridge.

This weekend, crews will partially close the intersection of 15th Ave NW and NW Market for overnight paving work. The roadwork is part of the 15th Ave W/NW and Ballard Bridge Paving and Safety Project. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) says crews are scheduled to grind and pave the intersection at 15th Ave NW and NW Market St during overnight hours on May 3 and 4, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.On the upside, there are no Ballard Bridge closures planned for this weekend.
Ballard Opera Man retires from Seattle Opera after four decades

Opera singer Stephen Wall—also known as the Ballard Opera Man—is retiring from the Seattle Opera after 43 years. Wall became the Ballard Opera Man during the pandemic shutdowns when he started singing in front of his home near the corner of 9th Ave NW and NW 60th St in April 2020. The concerts started almost by accident: Wall was taking a break from teaching singing lessons on Zoom, went outside to play his string bass, and noticed a few people had stopped to listen.
New closure on NW 56th St starts today in Ballard

The intersection of NW 56th St and 28th Ave NW has reopened to traffic following the recent full closure. But beginning today, April 30, a new closure is in place on NW 56th St between 26th Ave NW and 28th Ave NW to allow crews to continue work on sewer bypass pipes as part of the Ship Canal Water Quality Project. This section of NW 56th St will be fully closed 24 hours a day through May 9. Pedestrian access and local driveway access along NW 56th St will remain open during the closure.

Carkeek Park will be closed intermittently from May 5 to 12 as Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) begins geotechnical work related to the upcoming pedestrian bridge replacement project. The closures will support two major drilling operations on the park’s beach to evaluate soil conditions ahead of construction for the new bridge. A helicopter will be used to transport and reposition drilling equipment on three of the workdays, prompting full closures of certain areas of the park.

Ballard has a new reason to celebrate soggy sidewalks: The Ballard Alliance has just launched the Salmon Stroll, a free, interactive public art experience designed to brighten up rainy days. Local artist and designer Carolyn Kurth created the moisture-activated salmon artwork, which is now stenciled on sidewalks at 10 secret locations around the neighborhood. The catch? The salmon only appear when the sidewalk is wet, so participants will need to wait for a rainy day to spot them.
